Tracking Training
Any time that you are working with your dogs Olfactory System you are doing
something wonderful for your dog in couple of different ways.
1. You are activating your dog’s vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is the largest nerve in your dog’s body, and it connects to every internal organ. A vagus nerve that is activated on a regular basis calms the entire nervous system of the dog and also makes it easier to teach your dog to calm on command.
2. Whenever your dog learns a new skill, as he/she is learning they develop the ability to concentrate on a specific task for greater lengths of time, thus enabling any other type of training to progress smoother and easier.
3. Learning any new skill increases the self confidence of the dog. The more
skills you teach, and ways to use those skills, the more confident the dog!.
Things to Know
When training a tracking dog you are teaching your dog to follow a specific scent
thru various types of ground cover and to indicate any articles that are dropped
along that track. Tracking can be done to earn a competition title of just for fun to
develop your dog’s abilities. This does take a real commitment on your part as to
time allocated and consistency. Weather can also be a determining factor in how
much/how often training can be done. This takes a long term commitment to be
successful.
This is a ten lesson program, with lessons every two-three
weeks, homework between lessons.
Scent Work
When training a dog in scent work you are teaching your dog to find a specific
scent that is hidden within a given area. It can also be done to earn a competition
title, or just for fun. Scent Work frankly, is more fun for your dog and yourself, and
in general you can progress faster and easier. At the competition level there are
two divisions. In one your dog must locate and indicate where up to four different
scents are hidden. In the other they must find their handler’s human scent. If doing
this for fun you can use this for any scent whatsoever. I have had a few people go
thru this program to teach their dog to find shed Antlers in the woods!.
